Who are we?

OKH Logo-CLR.png

We are a Native Hawaiian non-profit organization with a mission to cultivate, nurture and support the advancement of youth in our communities who have the desire to connect, or who may already have a connection, to the science of the skies above.

Our logo depicts the stars above an expanse of ocean, representing the intimate connection between the skillfulness of ancestral wayfinding and the science of modern astronomy and our planetary ‘ohana.

There are several significant star lines in traditional wayfinding. For our logo, we selected Ke Ka Makali‘i (The Canoe Bailer of Makali‘i) because it is host to Ka hei hei o nā keiki (Orion in western view), a cherished star group of the late Master Navigator and our Founding Director, Chad Kālepa Baybayan.

Would you like to support our efforts?

We are here to lend a helping hand to youths of all ages who are at any point along their pursuit of astronomy, as well as those who aspire to a career in astronomy and space. Our goal is to offer these youths opportunities for learning, inspiration, motivation and growth in a place that is home to one of the world’s foremost sites for space observation.

We intend to achieve this through opportunities within the existing educational system, providing one-on-one mentorship programs, tours of astronomy facilities, volunteering and more. We were recently awarded a $5,000 Action Grant from Society for Science, most of which will be used toward creating a teachers focus group to discuss the types of education opportunities that can be incorporated into their classrooms to spark interest in the fields of astronomy and space. There is much more we wish to accomplish for our youths, so many more ways we would like to reach youths in all communities. Your donation will provide the means for us to do so.

We have applied for 501c3 status. If the IRS grants our application, the donation you make will be tax deductible. You can donate online or by mailing your donations to PO Box 38118, Honolulu, HI, 96837. Mahalo.
